A lace front wig is a wig that has a lace mesh attached on the front. When custom made, hair is pulled through the mesh to make it appear as if the wig is your real hair. Most wigs require bangs in order to cover the cap but lace front wigs can be pulled back. While they do look more natural than a traditional wig, makeup must be applied to cover the line in the front.
Celebrities use these kinds of wigs because the difference cannot be seen on camera or when at a distance from the audience, such as on stage at a theater or giving a concert. Hollywood women use them when they want a change in hairstyle without a change to their real hair.
The cost of a lace front wig will set you back 2,000 to 6,000 dollars, depending on the quality of the hair that is used. Lace front wigs can be applied on your own and it only takes a little bit of imagination to cover the front if you feel that is what you need to do.
With just a couple of practice runs, you will be able to attach your wig without a problem and it will not take much time to get your hairstyle finished.
Two Ways of Attaching Lace Front Wigs
1. Use a liquid adhesive that is suitable for human skin - set the wig on your head and pull the front lace mesh back by about an inch. Apply the adhesive to your hairline — it will disappear into the lace. Place the wig over this and it will look like the wig is your natural hair.
2. Use double-sided tape - This method is more involved than the liquid adhesive. After cutting the tape into lengths of three inches and widths of just under four inches, take one strip and place it on the patched area where the lace front attaches on one side of your head. With the strip on the hairline in front and touching the lace’s edge, press it down. Lay each strip end to end in the same manner until the entire front edge is covered and remember to press each one down as you apply it. The last strip attaches to the polyurethane near the lace front on the far side of where you began. Make sure there are not any open areas before you pull the wig down over the tape.
If you have applied your lace front wig with adhesive, you should be able to style and brush it without having to shift it back. The adhesive will help the wig lay flatter and this helps to make your wig look like real hair.
If you are spending an evening in close quarters and do not want it obvious that you are wearing a wig, try blending in foundation to cover the line in front. This is not recommended for daytime wear. If you are concerned about the way your lace front wig looks in the bright light, try using a headband that covers the hairline.
